The housewarming ceremony -- the Griha Pravesh ceremony

Every living being needs a house and the natural instincts of the creature drive it to make its home. Human beings are no different. Home sweet Home !! And everyone wants to own one. It is one of the most important investments one makes in one’s life. And once the house is ready, the housewarming ceremony or the Griha Pravesh ceremony is performed.

Griha Pravesh is a very important and a sacred ritual followed by people worldwide. Some sort of religious ceremony is followed by people of all religion, to ask for the blessings of God for happiness and success in the new house.
There are three types of Griha Pravesh:
Apoorva Griha Pravesh: For newly constructed house
Sapoorva Griha Pravesh: Reentry into the existing house after moving elsewhere
Dwandwah Griha Pravesh: For renovated or reconstructed house.

The months, during which this auspicious ritual called Housewarming Ceremony is performed, also matters. Months like Karthik and Mrigashira are believed to give average results. Whereas, months like Ashadh, Bhadrapad, Shravan, Ashwin and Paush are believed to be inauspicious to conduct a housewarming ceremony. Also, performing Griha Pravesh Ceremony should be strictly avoided during Amavasya.
 Auspicious Months & Results
  • Magh- Gain of wealth
  • Falgun- Gain of wealth and children
  • Vaishakh- Increase in wealth and prosperity
  • Jyestha- Gain of son and cattle
Grah Pravesh Sanskar is done once a house is built and ready to move in. Pujas and rituals are performed for the safety of the home and the members of the family who will live there. Griha Pravesh Sanskar is done to bring positivity into the home and to ward off all the evils and negativity that may reside in there.
It is believed, that Housewarming Puja pleases all the Gods and planets, and wards off all the negativity. The religious rituals performed during Griha Pravesh are done for the safety and betterment of the individuals who live in the house.
Starting a life in a home after Housewarming Ceremony has its own benefits. We make our home for ourselves and for our loved ones, then why to neglect this auspicious ritual?
Other than the safety and success of the family members, House Warming Ceremony is also important to fetch in all the positive energies of the surroundings. There is no better place than a home and no other place can comfort us as much our home does.
The Puja for Griha Pravesh should be done according to the Griha Pravesh Muhurat. This is to ensure maximum blessings flow into the new home. Anything done at the right time will make the result more fruitful and effective.

Griha Pravesh will usually have the following ceremonies:
Vastu Puja for Griha Pravesh: Done outside the house, before entering.
Vastu Shanti for Griha Pravesh: Performing a Home, to drive away all the evil and negativity
Satya Narayana Puja for Griha Pravesh: This Puja is mostly followed in South India and also states like Maharashtra and West Bengal. Satya Narayana represents Lord Vishnu to some of his devotees. This Puja starts with the Puja of Lord Ganesh to remove all obstacles. This is then followed by performing Puja for the Navagrahas (9 planets) and finally Puja to Lord Satyanarayana for the well being and prosperity of the family.

Given below is the Griha Pravesh Muhurats  for the coming month. These have been decided according to the Hindu Panchang. One of the foremost important aspects for doing Housewarming Ceremony is the positioning of the Sun; and the most auspicious timing to perform Griha Pravesh Ceremony is when the Sun moves to Uttarayan (Capricorn).
